Anthropic retires Prompt Tools and legacy Workbench

Anthropic’s legacy Workbench and its experimental Prompt Tools endpoints— generate_prompt , improve_prompt and templatize_prompt —were retired on 17 August. Existing teams must move affected workflows rather than expect a grace period.

  • Anthropic’s legacy Workbench and its experimental Prompt Tools endpoints— generate_prompt , improve_prompt and templatize_prompt —were retired on 17 August. Existing teams must move affected workflows rather than expect a grace period.
  • The retirement applies to the legacy tooling layer, not the Claude API or model access. The practical replacement is to put prompt logic and evaluation flows into maintained application code and Messages-based integrations.
Why it matters

This is a small platform change with a potentially outsized operational effect: unowned experiments, internal prompt libraries and evaluation scripts can quietly become production dependencies. Leaders should inventory them, assign a migration owner and test replacements before a release cycle is blocked.
